NEMA Ratings and IP Protection Equivalency

The following table provides a comparison between NEMA enclosure ratings and their approximate IP (Ingress Protection) equivalents. NEMA ratings define environmental protection for electrical enclosures mainly in North America, while IP ratings are defined under IEC standards and widely used internationally.

Although direct equivalency does not always exist, this reference table helps engineers and designers select suitable enclosure protection levels based on environmental exposure such as dust, water, corrosion, and outdoor conditions.

NEMA 2 Indoor use, drip-proof enclosure for light moisture exposure. IP11 Protection against vertically falling water drops.
NEMA 3 Outdoor use, protects against rain, sleet, windblown dust and ice formation. IP54 Dust-protected and splash-resistant enclosure.
NEMA 3R Outdoor use, rain-resistant enclosure with ventilation openings. IP24 Protection against water splashing from any direction.
NEMA 3S Outdoor use, operable when ice forms on enclosure. IP54 Dust-protected and splash-resistant, suitable for harsh weather.
NEMA 4 Watertight enclosure for indoor and outdoor use, hose-down and rain resistant. IP65 Dust-tight and protected against water jets.
NEMA 4X Same as NEMA 4 with additional corrosion resistance. IP66 Dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.
NEMA 5 Dust-tight enclosure for indoor use. IP52 Protection against limited dust and dripping water.
NEMA 6 Submersible enclosure for temporary underwater exposure. IP67 Protection against immersion in water up to 1 meter.
NEMA 6P Submersible enclosure with corrosion resistance for prolonged immersion. IP68 Protection against continuous immersion in water.
NEMA 12 Indoor use, protects against dust, dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids. IP54 Dust-protected and splash-resistant.
NEMA 13 Indoor use, protects against dust, spraying water, oil and coolant. IP54 Protection against dust and splashing liquids.
